Against one wall there was a row of sealed airtight glass boxes, each over a metre squared.

Each unit had a dedicated air conditioning and irrigation unit, which maintained a pre-programmed atmosphere.

In layman’s terms each box could become a microworld: here Professor B could create the humidity of Africa, the freezing meltwaters of the Antarctic, or the arid dryness of the Sahara. Sunlight, darkness, wind, rain, snow, you name it, it was all artificial, man-made.

The first task on Billy’s list was to make sure that there had been no quarantine breach. This might sound highly technical but involved nothing more complicated than taking a class register: were all the devilish little creatures in attendance or had any escaped?
